Standing by the people of Klong Toey

Thailand

Thailand is among the 20 countries most impacted by tuberculosis: 100,000 people suffer from this disease and there are 2,300 new contaminations diagnosed every week.

Since the programme’s introduction in 2012, BE Health’s Peer Health Educators from the Siam Kempinski Hotel in Bangkok reached more than 500 of their fellow employees and approximately 4,500 community members through social mobilisation in Klong Toey and communication campaigns in town.

In addition, BE Health organised 23 training for Peer Health Educators and held more than 132 prevention sessions at their workplace, carried out 404 home visits to tuberculosis patients, supported 97 patients until the completion of their treatment and trained 19 teenage school students to become Youth Health Volunteers, whose influence expands beyond school grounds, into their families and wider community.

In 2017, BE Health’s main activities in Bangkok will be to provide training to additional community health volunteers in Klong Toey district, organise community health campaigns about tuberculosis and HIV, continue to undertake active TB case findings in the local community and provide social protection to at least 30 TB patients.
